The Juniper Tree (VOILA! Festival)

  • 265 Camden High Street London, England, NW1 7BU United Kingdom (map)

A punchy, bodily piece on the gap between outer world and inner experience in a highly sensitive child. At the edge of reality and absurdity – the world highly sensitive people live in every day.

A single performer shifts between identities and uses light, sound, body and voice to externalise internal hell. A 6-year-old-child – Kiddi – is shown through the body of a 45-year-old woman. Feel the experience of high sensitivity and see the world through the eyes of 6-year-old Kiddi.

Act I is entirely subjective. It's bodily, distorted, immersive. It's an inner reality of Kiddi.

Act II switches into an objective, observational register. The actress changes appearance on stage and becomes a neutral external narrator. The same events are retold objectively – what has actually happened.

The play does not ask 'Were the parents good or bad?' but 'What happens when an insufficiently attuned environment meets a highly sensitive nervous system.'
