📅 Women Writers Festival 2026

Launched in 2023, the Women Writers Festival has grown into an annual platform for new writing by women and female-identifying writers across theatre, spoken word and live performance.

Based at Etcetera Theatre in Camden, the festival removes many of the financial and practical barriers independent artists face when bringing new work to the stage, while connecting bold new writing with live audiences, reviewers and the wider industry.

The 2026 edition ran from 27 February to 31 March, presenting 58 shows across 107 performances and welcoming audiences throughout the month.

📡 Beyond the Stage

The festival was designed to extend opportunities beyond a single performance.

Alongside live presentation, participating artists benefited from Etcetera Theatre's established marketing infrastructure, online listings, social media channels, promotional assets and reviewer network.

Selected work was also livestreamed and captured digitally, helping artists showcase their work beyond the venue and creating an accessible record of the festival.

The festival's press and reviewer reach included relationships and outreach across publications including Camden New Journal, Islington Tribune, London Pub Theatres Magazine, Everything Theatre and London Theatre, alongside independent reviewers and theatre media.

📸 Festival Growth

Across its editions, Women Writers Festival has developed from a focused new-writing initiative into a substantial month-long programme.

The 2026 festival demonstrated strong demand from artists for affordable professional performance opportunities, with all available programme slots filled within 14 days.

Our social media and digital campaigns have also significantly expanded the festival's reach, with individual open-call activity reaching more than 40,000 views.

💬 Why It Matters

Independent artists frequently face substantial costs before a new production reaches an audience, including venue hire, technical staffing, marketing and rehearsal expenses.

Women Writers Festival was developed to reduce those barriers while giving artists access to an established central London venue, professional technical infrastructure, box office operation, marketing support and new audiences.

The result is a festival that supports both creative development and practical career progression, while giving audiences access to a concentrated programme of original new work.

🔮 Looking Ahead

The success of the 2026 edition demonstrated the potential of Etcetera Theatre's festival model: concentrated programming, reduced financial barriers for artists, strong audience engagement and extensive use of the venue's existing infrastructure.

We are continuing to develop this model across future artist-development and festival programmes at Etcetera Theatre.
